What is a Respirator Fit Test?

Respirator fit tests are required by OSHA for all employees who must wear respirators to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals or substances such as silica dust, welding fumes, paint spray mists, and solvents. A respirator will not protect you if it does not fit your face. Certain respirators, known as tight-fitting respirators, must form a tight seal with your face to work properly. Prior to wearing a respirator on the job, the employee must first be medically cleared to wear the respirator and then complete a respirator fit test using the specific make, model, and size of respirator that will be worn on the job. The employer is responsible for providing the mask used for testing. A respirator fit test usually takes about 20 – 30 minutes to complete and must be performed at least annually.
